Job Title: Metallurgist

Summary of Position:

Provides metallurgical expertise and technical support to the production department and process development.

Employment Status: Full-time

Primary Duties of Position:

-Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.

-Perform root cause analysis of failures

-Provide technical support of heat treat process and metallurgical lab on daily basis.

-Assist in development of heat treat parameters for new materials and the improvement of existing methods.

-Perform required metallurgical testing analysis; prepares and evaluates mounted samples when necessary.

-Research metallurgical properties of current and proposed materials.

-Conduct metallurgical failure test analysis and propose corrective/preventative action.

-Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.

-Develop process simulations and heat treat/carburization models.

-Develop recipes for implementation in heat treat furnaces.

-Program recipes in heat treat furnaces.

-Perform test cycles and apply appropriate requirements to meet customer specifications for heat treat protocol.

-Perform any other tasks or duties assigned by Management.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite.  Previous experience working within Quality Software and ERP  system, or ability to learn Quality Software and ERP system.

-Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills.

-Ability to multi-task and handle multiple projects at one time without sacrificing quality of work.

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

-Ability to effectively interact with all members of the organization and work with cross-functional teams.

-Strong attention to detail.

-Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.

-Must be able to read and understand documents written in English, and be able to speak English as it pertains to the position.

-Strong understanding of automotive quality requirements including but not limited to TS 16949, QS 9000 and AS 9100.


Required Education: Bachelor degree in Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent required, Master degree strongly preferred.

Years of Experience: 0-2 years maximum in heat treatment industry or in metallurgical testing laboratory. 


Physical Requirements:

-Must be able to stand and walk about for long periods of time during an 8 - 12 hour shift.  Must be able to bend, stoop and lift up to 30+ pounds to a height of 3 - 4 feet when necessary.

-Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and movement of the whole body, such as lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

-Must have the ability to keep or regain body balance or stay upright when in an unstable position. The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects. The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands together to grasp, manipulate, or move objects. Must be able to lift arm over head.

-Must be able to pass a vision, and color blindness test. Must be able to hear alarms and understand speech at normal volumes.


Mental Requirements:

-Must be able to do simple math (add, subtract, multiply and divide.) Must be able to read and understand documents written in English, and be able to speak English as it pertains to the job. Must be able to write legibly. 

-Must have the ability to perform basic reasoning, as trained, in determining causes of operating errors and decide what to do or who to alert.


Equipment Used:

-Must be able to read precision measuring instruments and devices and be able to record readings.

-Must be able to occasionally use tools ranging from common screwdrivers, hammers and wrenches.

-Must be physically able to use standard office equipment, including computer, fax, copy machine, telephone, etc.


Working Conditions:

-Works indoors, in high temperatures at times.

-Must be able to work in high temperature conditions and adjust to extreme temperature change.

-Exposure to carbon dust. PPE provided when required.
